New Bankruptcy Laws

Well, I'm sure you've heard all about the bankruptcy reform. Congress has been trying for eight years to solve a problem that doesn't exist: bankruptcy fraud. So now, after lots of lobbying and money spent from the credit card industry, there's a new set of bancruptcy laws in place.

Is bankruptcy dead?

Definitely not!

Remember, it was bankruptcy reform, not bankruptcy elimination. Bankruptcy is still around, and this bankruptcy attorney is still in business. Because of harsh requirements they are placing on a bankruptcy lawyer, I think you'll find that some entities that used to help people out of debt and be debt free are no longer willling to take the risk.

So what's different?

Short answer? There's a lot more to do to get that coveted bankruptcy discharge. It was not easy before, but they've added even more steps, hurdles and time to the process.

And yes, more steps and requirements does mean that the cost of filing bankruptcy through qualified and skilled bankruptcy attorneys has increased. Long gone are the days where filing bankruptcy cost "only" $1,000 plus the filing fee.
